There’s nothing like a tidy desk with cool accessories to make even the most reluctant student want to get down to business. A few pieces of PVC, a small turntable, some paint, paper and a variety of Kool Tak™ products turn a cluttered desktop into a neat, organized and pretty work space. This project is obviously made for a girl, but a change in papers, colors and embellishments will make it perfect for your favorite guy.
Here’s how I did it:

Round turntable (Rubbermaid)
PVC Pipe:
3” diameter, cut to 5 ½”, 4” and 2 ½”
2” diameter, cut to 6” and 4 ¾”
Sand paper or rotary electric sander
Spray paint, Satin Fern, (Krylon Fusion)
Patterned paper, 12” x 12”, four sheets in coordinating colors: two assorted patterns and two semi-solid colors
Alphabet Dies (Quickutz)
Embellishment dies (Spellbinders)
Die Cutting Machine (Spellbinders)
Dye Inks, Shabby Shutters and Broken China (Tim Holtz Distress Inks, Ranger)
Tools: Permanent marker, scissors, paper trimmer, flexible measuring tape, circle punches, 1 3/4″ and 3″, sponges
Instructions
Sand each cut end of the PVC pipe pieces, spray the PVC pipe and turntable with spray paint and allow to dry.
Trace the bottom of each pipe onto chipboard and cover with a Kool Tak™ Ultra Clear sheet. Cut each circle out, just inside the line to keep the adhesive from showing when attached, punch circles from the patterned paper and set aside.
Measure pipes and cut:
Base Papers: ½” wider than the pipe’s diameters and 1” smaller than the length of each pipe.
Label Papers: ½” wider than the pipe’s diameters and 2” smaller than the length of each pipe.
Place the Kool Tak™ Crafting Sheet on your work surface and sponge the edges of all papers with dye inks.
Cut the words PENCILS, PENS,TOOLS, MARKERS and CLIPS as well as any embellishments from Kool Tak™ Punch Adhesive.
Remove the release papers from the letters and line up the letters on the label patterned papers. Apply Kool Tak™ Shiny Foils to each word.
Cut embellishments from Kool Tak™ Punch Adhesive and apply randomly on the patterned papers. Remove the release paper and sprinkle with Kool Tak™ Sparkles Glitter.
Note: Be sure to leave the area where the papers will overlap free of glitter. You can add embellishments over the seam after attaching the papers to the pipe.
Wrap each base paper around the PVC pipe and attach with ½” Kool Tak™ Premium Extreme Adhesive, lining up the paper ½” from the top and bottom. Apply the foiled and glittered papers over the base papers, centering them top to bottom and attach with 1/2″ Kool Tak™ Ultra Clear. Remove the release paper from the chipboard circles, apply the patterned paper circles to the center of each chipboard circle and attach each to the bottom of the pipes. Add two strips of 1/2″ Kool Tak™ Ultra Clear Adhesive to the bottoms, remove the release paper and attach the pipes to the turntable, facing the words on each pipe toward the outside.
Fill the pipes and turntable with the tools your student needs to ensure a successful school year.
